Neurology is the branch of Medicine which deals with the conditions of central and peripheral nervous system. Nerves coming from the brain go to all parts of the body and control the functions of those organs. Everything in the body including movement of the limbs, production of hormones and all sensory organs are controlled by the brain. Any disease of the nervous system falls under the purview of Neurology. Patients suffering from Headache, Migraine, Dizziness, Weakness of Limbs, Tremors, Movement Disorders, Vertigo are first seen by a Neurologist who would diagnose the problem and if the treatment is to be given through surgery then the patient is referred to a Neurosurgeon otherwise the treatment is given by a Neurologist. One of the most common disease which is handled by Neurologists is Brain Stroke. Patients who show symptoms of brain stroke like slurring of the voice or weakness on one side of the body should be rushed to a hospital which has the facility of MRI Scan and a Neurologist on board. Such patients can improve dramatically if the treatment is provided within the first 6 hours of the stroke happening. Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, Dementia are some of the other conditions which are treated by Neurologists.
Neurology and Neurosurgical treatments in India are very advanced due to the availability of state of art diagnostic modalities and a very high quality manpower in terms of the Neurologists and Neurosurgeons. Most good hospitals in India are equipped with a good quality MRI Scanner which is considered as the gold standard in diagnosing the diseases of the Brain and the Musculoskeletal System. CT Scan is the minimum that any Neuro Specialist would be requiring to make a quick and accurate diagnosis. Some of the other conditions like Epilepsy are diagnosed through EEG, while Nerve Condition Velocity (NCV) is also a very important diagnostic tool for the Neurologists. Sleep Studies help in diagnosing the problem of Sleep Apnea. The treatment given by Neurologists has to be backed by a team of physiotherapists as patients of Stroke, Alzheimers, Parkinson, Paralysis all require intensive rehabilitation programme. Every neurology programme in India is backed by a strong rehabilitation team. India has a population of 1.3 billion people and therefore the doctors in India get to see a lot more patients than their counterparts in other countries. Indian doctors get to see far more variety of conditions which makes them highly experienced in treating any neurological condition.
In most cases of Neurological conditions the main cost goes towards diagnosing the problem. For brain stroke patients who are rushed to a Neurology hospital the first step is to get an MRI Scan of the Brain done which costs Rs. 10000 - 12000 at different hospitals. Some blood tests alongwith the MRI scan are also done. If the MRI Scan reveals brain stroke then the cost of Thrombolyzing the patient would cost Rs. 75000 - 90000 if the stroke is ischemic in nature. The patient will have to be admitted to Neuro ICU for 3-4 days and the total hospitalization may be for 10-15 days. The total cost for the treatment of Ischemic Brain Stroke would cost Rs. 2 - 2.5 lacs. However if the stroke is haemorrhagic then the patient is managed conservatively in the ICU and then in the ward. In such cases the cost of hospitalization would be in the range of 1.5 - 1.8 lacs. However the cost of physiotherapy post discharge would be in the range of 20-25 thousand per month and the rehabilitation may last 1-2 years. Brain stroke patients who come to India for rehabilitation spend close to USD 5000 for each month of hospitalization and physiotherapy. Typically such patients require 30-45 days of intensive rehab during which they recover 25-30 % in terms of mobility and functions.
